The Rosen Center for Advanced Computing (RCAC) is seeking participants for our Anvil Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. This is a paid internship program for students that will take place during the summer of 2023. We would appreciate your help identifying interested students and relaying this message to them.

The Anvil REU is an onsite internship at Purdue University, a Big 10 university located in West Lafayette, Indiana. This hands-on experiential summer program takes place over the course of 12 weeks. Students will receive a $600/week stipend, and housing in a Purdue residence hall is provided for the duration of the program. The application deadline is February 15, 2023.

The Anvil REU aims to develop the next-generation workforce in advanced computing and cyberinfrastructure technologies. It offers students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to build and support advanced research systems and scientific applications. Modeled after RCAC’s successful, decades-long student apprentice program, the Anvil REU program teaches through hands-on experience, enabling students to learn by doing. Participants will work on the National Science Foundation-funded Anvil system in a team environment under the guidance and mentorship of cyberinfrastructure professionals.

Projects include:

  1. Data analytics: Instrument and perform analysis of scientific application workloads on the Anvil system
  2. High Performance Computing (HPC): Extend the Anvil system to burst scientific workflows into the Microsoft Azure cloud
  3. Kubernetes: To support science gateways applications, extend Anvil’s Kubernetes-based composable subsystems to use cloud-based Kubernetes clusters
  4. Containers to Support Education: Enable the use of large-scale notebook deployments to provide interactive access to Anvil in support of education

Please distribute this information to undergraduate students of any background who may be interested in gaining hands-on experience at an R1 (Research) university working on the Anvil system and enabling the growth of research.
