Project Information

As part of Phase II for the North Woods Project (NWP)—an ongoing digital project at URI which combines different perspectives on place, from art, writing, and humanities to the ecological and environmental sciences—we are seeking student contributions for digital media content that will be featured in the project. NWP consists of a website, a digital map, and an augmented reality walking tour in the North Woods on URI’s campus. A previous example of the project completed by one of the project PIs can be found on the EcoTour website. At each “point of interest” (or POI) along the tour, users will discover different types of digital content about the woods, from information about flora and fauna to histories of the woods ranging from its recent campus usage to a natural history of the area. In its second phase, DWELL is seeking to expand the number of project contributors to include URI students doing creative work from disciplines across the university. As part of this move, we are trying to encourage students to submit a wide array of creative work and proposals—ranging from poetry to music to artwork to photography to videos and more—that we can add to the digital project. CAREERS will support a graduate student fellow in the DWELL Lab to assist with 3D modeling, video production, and digital design over a six month period beginning in Summer 2023.

Project Information Subsection

The student will support researcher Dr. Madison Jones with the production of short films using the lab’s existing equipment (such as GoPros and Cameras) and drone footage taken by the DWELL Lab Mavic Air 2 Drone (URI UAS Permit Number 23-005), as well as facilitate the creation of 3D models using the lab’s iPad Pro with LiDAR. We will be using Polycam which harnesses Apple’s Object Capture API to create 3D photogrammetry models from photographs, video, and LiDAR capture. These models are then exported as OBJ and GLTF files and uploaded to augmented reality platforms like Hoverlay and Adobe Aero for testing.
